If you have a Garmin GPS with European mapping, then life is very simple indeed: just download the file below and transfer it to your Garmin to find waypoints and routes to the Ring from Calais, Dunkerque, Frankfurt, Koln-Bonn and Hahn (what Ryanair likes to call 'Frankfurt Hahn'): Right-click the link, select Save Target As, save to your PC, double-click to open in Mapsource, connect your GPS then select Send to Device. Otherwise, you can find photo-directions below. |

| There is only one airport serving Köln and Bonn, so the no-frills airlines fly into the same place as the full-service airlines. Many thanks to Dominik Peitgen for the photos - I always do this journey in the dark! He takes a different route to me, and I'm pretty sure mine is quicker, so there are no photos for the last bit, but you actually pick up Nurburgring signs after the last photo shown. There are speed limits along quite a lot of the route, and the police will be pleased to help themselves to your Euros if you break it, so it's adviseable to stick within 10-15kph of the limit. Leaving the airport, which takes you straight out onto the A59 autobahn, follow signs towards Bonn. After around 20km, you'll reach AD Beuel:
This is a key to pay attention, because you will shortly want to turn right (south) onto the A565, at this point picking up signs to Koblenz as well as Bonn:
The signage is rather inconsistent, but it's now Koblenz you want to be following as you're going to stay on the A565 through Bonn. When the A565 splits off to the right, you want to bear left onto the A61 towards Koblenz and Trier - shown on this sign as straight on:
Stay on the A61 and you will start to pick up signs to the Nurburgring. At junction 33, turn right onto the B412 (signposted Nurburgring, among others) This road will take you past Brunnchen and Pflanzgarten 1 on your right, then after a sharp right-left bend you'll reach a T-junction. The is the B258. Turn right, then take the first right. You are passing under the Ring. For Adenau, carry straight on this road. For the Ring, take the first left (immediately after you've gone under the bridge). You will reach a roundabout - the entrance to the Ring is on your left. |
